11,033 People Acquired Citizenship in Austria in First 3 Quarters of 2023

A total of 11,033 persons acquired citizenship in Austria in the first three quarters of this year, according to the figures provided by the Austrian government.
The same source shows that the total also included 2,614 people residing abroad, thus accounting for a 1.1 percentpercent decline compared to the figures from the same period last year.
According to the figures from Statistics Austria, the decline is attributed to a total of 15.1 percent reduction in the naturalisation of victims of National Socialism (NS) and their descendants, totalling 2,566.
Of these, 99.6 per cent (2,555) live abroad. The overall trend of increasing naturalisations observed since 2021 has been interrupted, as stated by Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria, according to the Director General of Statistics Austria, Tobias Thomas.
For a period from January to September 2023, a total of 2,566 persons were naturalised as political refugees and their descendants, of which 2,555 people or 99.6 percent reside abroad.
Compared to the first three quarters of last year, there was a surge of 3.5 per cent in naturalisations of persons residing in Austria, totalling 8,419 persons.
Nearly a quarter of those naturalised in the first three quarters of 2023 were born in Austria (2,710 or 24.6 percent). Women accounted for half of the naturalisations (50.6 per cent), and approximately one-third were individuals under 18 years old (32.6 per cent).

A total of 3,187 people, or 37.9 percent of those naturalized residing in Austria, were previously citizens of one of the following states: Syria (1,322 or 15.7 percent of all those naturalized in 2023 with residence in Austria), Turkey (791), Bosnia and Herzegovina (542), and Afghanistan (532).
The figures from the same source reveal that in the six federal states, a larger number of persons were naturalized for a period from January to September this year compared to the same period last year.
The highest relative increases were observed in Lower Austria (+28.1 percent to 1,457 naturalizations), followed by Upper Austria (25.3 percent increase to 1,244), Styria (22.3 percent to 905), Burgenland (21.5 percent to 147), Vorarlberg (14.3 percent to 487), and Tyrol (1.9 percent to 644).Statistics Austria

In contrast, fewer naturalizations were registered in the following territories: Carinthia (24.8 percent decrease to 315), Vienna (13.0 percent decline to 2,859), and Salzburg (5.0 decline to 361) experienced fewer naturalizations compared to the first three quarters of 2022
In the first three quarters of this year, almost all naturalizations occurred due to legal entitlement (7,729 or 70.1 percent).
