Airfare Prices from Amsterdam Set to Rise as Schiphol Airport Increases Fees
Key Points
1. Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam has announced updated airline fees.
2. Ticket prices are expected to rise by 37% over the next three years.
3. Ticket costs will vary depending on factors such as the aircraft type and whether flights operate during the day or night.
Airlines flying through Schiphol are set to increase ticket prices annually over the next two years—by 41% in 2025 and 5% in 2026—followed by a projected 7.5% decrease in 2027, resulting in an overall 37% rise from 2024 to 2027.
"This substantial increase in fees is essential to support Schiphol’s investments in quality and sustainability, enhance services for airlines and passengers, and ensure fair working conditions for all airport staff," noted Robert Carsouw, CFO of the Royal Schiphol Group.
These fee increases aim to boost service quality but could also make Schiphol one of Europe’s priciest airports.
Higher Night Flight Fees Expected at Schiphol
Schiphol has announced that night flights will incur higher charges as part of its strategy to reduce noise pollution. Flying at night will be three to six times more costly than daytime flights, with additional pricing adjustments based on aircraft noise levels.
"By significantly raising costs for noisier aircraft and nighttime flights, we’re helping to reduce disturbances for nearby residents," Carsouw added.
Incentives for Airlines to Use Quieter Aircraft at Schiphol
Schiphol will offer reduced charges for quieter, newer aircraft, encouraging airlines to update their fleets to reduce noise.
The new fee increases follow a smaller 14.8% rise introduced by Schiphol in 2024 and are part of a €3 billion investment plan for airport maintenance and upgrades over 2024-2027. Schiphol saw 31.8 million passengers in the first half of 2024, with forecasts suggesting up to 69 million travelers by year-end.
