Thai nationals stood as the fourth-largest nationality with the highest number of visa applications in 2022—208,356 in total—making them the primary applicants for the Southeast Asian region. Despite having the largest number of applicants from East Asia (92,780 applications compared to Mongolia's second-highest at 15,107 for 2022), China is listed as the sixth-largest origin country for visa applicants in the year. Chinese applicants demonstrated a high recognition rate, with 90.7% of applications approved, resulting in almost 80,000 visas issued in 2022. However, when comparing this year's data with previous years and considering China's population of 1.4 billion, the application rates by Chinese nationals have significantly decreased. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is suggested as a contributing factor, as application rates by Chinese nationals dropped by 90.6% during the pandemic years of 2019, 2020, and 2021.
