Despite facing sanctions, Russians rank as the second-highest applicants for Schengen visas from Asia in 2022.

Türkiye leads in visa applications from the entire Asian continent for the year 2022, comprising 17.2% of all applications. With a total of 778,409 applications, Turkish nationals have submitted the highest number of visa applications in Europe for 2022, as reported by SchengenVisaInfo.com. Russia secures the second spot in visa applications from both North Asia and the entire Asian continent for 2022, contributing to 15.2% of all applications. Russian citizens submitted 678,239 requests for Schengen visas in the past year, marking the highest number of applications from North Asia, the entire Asian continent, and ranking among the leading nationalities applying for visas to Germany over the last five years.

While Turkish nationals demonstrated the highest application rates, they also experienced a higher rejection rate compared to other regions—15.7%, second only to India, which had a rejection rate of 18.3% with 121,188 visa applications declined. The total number of rejected applicants from Türkiye amounted to 120,876, contrasting with 645,842 approved applicants.

Schengen Statistics reveal that India led in visa applications from the South Asian region in 2022 and ranked third on the Asian continent. A total of 671,928 applications were filed, with 541,094 or 81.7% receiving approval.

Thai nationals stood as the fourth-largest nationality with the highest number of visa applications in 2022—208,356 in total—making them the primary applicants for the Southeast Asian region. Thai applicants, along with Kazakhs, experienced one of the lowest rejection rates, with only 8.20% of visa applicants facing a negative response.

Central Asian countries saw Kazakhstan leading in visa applications, with a total of 106,097 applications, ranking the country as the fifth-largest origin for visa applicants in the year.

Despite having the largest number of applicants from East Asia (92,780 applications compared to Mongolia's second-highest at 15,107 for 2022), China is listed as the sixth-largest origin country for visa applicants in the year. Chinese applicants demonstrated a high recognition rate, with 90.7% of applications approved, resulting in almost 80,000 visas issued in 2022. However, when comparing this year's data with previous years and considering China's population of 1.4 billion, the application rates by Chinese nationals have significantly decreased. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is suggested as a contributing factor, as application rates by Chinese nationals dropped by 90.6% during the pandemic years of 2019, 2020, and 2021.
