Easter Holiday Travel to Europe Threatened by Widespread Air Traffic Strikes
Travellers heading to Europe around the Easter holiday are being urged to closely monitor their flight status amid growing concerns over widespread air traffic control strikes. Disruptions, including delays and cancellations, are expected to escalate as strike activity increases across key European destinations.
While the warning has been issued to British holidaymakers in particular, it applies to all passengers planning travel to Europe in the coming weeks. Industrial action is anticipated in several countries—including France, Italy, and Spain—potentially causing major delays.
“A general strike is planned for April 29, 2025, which may cause severe travel disruption across the entire country.”

Additional strikes may also occur in Germany and Belgium, further complicating travel across the continent. Authorities note that Saturday travel, falling just before the Easter holiday, may be particularly affected due to increased passenger volume.
Popular European Destinations to Be Heavily Impacted
According to Global Travel Analyst Dion Pllana, some of Europe’s most frequented tourist spots are likely to experience notable delays. The combination of peak holiday traffic and widespread industrial action poses serious challenges for passengers.
France will face confirmed air traffic control strikes from April 18 to 19 and again on April 25, with walkouts expected at key airports such as Paris Charles de Gaulle, Orly, Lyon, and Marseille.
Italy is also set to experience a nationwide 24-hour strike on April 19, affecting operations at Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Venice, and other major airports.
In Spain, disruptions are expected in Madrid and Barcelona between April 20 and 30, creating a prolonged period of uncertainty for travellers.
Belgium, meanwhile, continues to face recurring industrial actions, with unions planning national strikes on the 13th of each month until further notice.
How Travellers Can Protect Themselves
Despite the looming disruptions, experts suggest that travellers can still enjoy their holidays—provided they take precautions. Travel health insurance is strongly recommended, as it can cover unexpected expenses, including those related to flight delays or cancellations.
By staying informed, adjusting travel plans when necessary, and securing insurance coverage, travellers can minimize the impact of any disruptions and continue enjoying their European getaways.
