Germany has opted to increase the quantity of work visas. Specifically, on June 1, Germany will double the number of work visas to 50,000, which will be allocated to citizens of six countries in the Western Balkans. As a result, individuals from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia will benefit from enhanced access to Germany's labor market under the Western Balkans Regulation starting June 1, 2024.

The upcoming visa registration under the Western Balkans Regulation is scheduled to commence on May 7, 2024, and conclude on May 14, 2024. Citizens of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia are eligible to participate in this process. Given the considerable interest in obtaining work visas from these six countries, Germany has instituted a monthly lottery system for granting these visas. During the seven-day registration period, applicants from these nations are required to register for visa appointments. It's essential to note that applicants need to register only once, as subsequent changes will not be permitted. Following the registration period, German authorities will notify selected applicants through the lottery system.

In 2023, approximately 76,000 individuals from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia were employed in Germany, holding valid work permits. This marked a notable increase from the previous year, as in 2022, Germany had approximately 62,000 workers from these nations with valid permits. This data reveals a significant 22% rise in the number of workers from these countries employed in Germany in 2023 compared to 2022.
