German transport minister urges Deutsche Bahn to enhance punctuality and implement cost-cutting measures
German Transport Minister Volker Wissing has called on Deutsche Bahn to cut costs, boost profitability, and significantly reduce delays "in the short term."
Wissing Sets 2027 Deadline for Deutsche Bahn Improvements
Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) has urged Deutsche Bahn to enhance the punctuality of long-distance trains while streamlining administrative operations to increase cost efficiency and profitability.
A recent Deutsche Bahn report revealed that passengers face frequent delays and cancellations, with the company making up to 3 million timetable changes in 2024 alone. According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, schedules are no longer precise but "estimated."
Wissing has set a 2027 deadline for Deutsche Bahn to present a service and financial improvement plan, requiring quarterly updates to the Federal Ministry for Transport. Though Deutsche Bahn is a joint-stock company, the Federal Republic of Germany is its sole shareholder. Wissing emphasized that he will be "personally informed" if targets are missed.
Euro 2024 Highlights Deutsche Bahn's Struggles
Years of underinvestment and infrastructure decay led to Deutsche Bahn's poor performance being spotlighted internationally during Euro 2024. This added pressure for the company to address its transport issues, already well-known among the German public.
Deutsche Bahn has begun a large-scale construction project post-tournament, set to last until 2030. However, further disruptions are expected in the meantime, with major lines such as Berlin-Hamburg and Frankfurt-Mannheim closed until mid-December 2024 for upgrades.
