Germany stands as the preferred study destination for more than 75% of international students within the country
A recent study conducted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) indicates that Germany is the top choice for international students seeking to pursue higher education abroad, according to more than three-quarters of the 13,871 participants surveyed by the "Benchmark International University" (BintHo).
The study findings reveal that Germany's diverse range of courses and favorable study conditions are major factors attracting a growing number of international students. A significant majority, 91%, appreciate the variety of study programs offered in Germany. Furthermore, an impressive 88% of international students value the international reputation associated with obtaining a degree from a German educational institution, making it their preferred destination.
However, education quality is just one aspect driving international students to choose Germany, as the country also provides excellent career prospects post-graduation, attracting 81% of respondents. Language proficiency poses a challenge, with the majority of international students enrolled in English-language programs (about 75%), while 25% are studying in German. The language of instruction can vary by degree level, with two-thirds of international students pursuing master's programs in English and only 27% in bachelor's programs.
The DAAD's BintHo study highlights some areas for improvement, such as fostering a more welcoming culture in Germany and addressing reported instances of discrimination against international students. The study also indicates that 38% of German students would like to see more international fellow students at their university.
While challenges such as finding accommodation and navigating COVID-related restrictions exist, university fees and living costs are generally considered affordable. In fact, 82% of international students would recommend their current university, and over 60% express a desire to stay in Germany after completing their studies.
Additionally, the survey identifies that the majority of students intending to remain in Germany after graduation include Syrians (83.4%), Afghanis (78.8%), and Albanians (77.9%). Conversely, those with little intention of staying in Germany after completing their studies include nationals of Cameroon, with 54.1% expressing they definitely or most probably won't stay. Chileans (53.9%), Italians (50.3%), Hungarians (49.7%), and Spaniards (45.3%) also feature in this category.
