Heat Warning Issued for Germany with Temperatures Expected to Exceed 35°C
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a heat warning across Germany, as temperatures over 35 degrees celsius are expected in some regions.
DWD Issues Heat Warning for Germany
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a heat warning for July 31 and August 1, anticipating the hottest days of the year so far with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius.
Residents in the west, south, southwest, and central regions of Germany should take particular care. Extreme heat warnings have been issued for Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Baden-Württemberg until 7 pm on July 31.
The DWD advises residents to stay out of direct sunlight, drink plenty of water, and keep cool indoors.
Following the heatwave, thunderstorms with heavy rain are expected on Thursday, although temperatures will remain around 30 degrees, maintaining hot and muggy conditions, according to Wetter.de.
Local Authorities Urged to Prepare for Increased Fire Risk
In a press release on July 30, Germany’s Senckenberg Society for Nature Research (SBiK-F) in Frankfurt warned that fire risk "will increase significantly across Europe" in the coming decades, including in currently unaffected regions.
"The more the climate warms, the more dramatic 'fire weather' developments will be," noted researchers led by Thomas Hickler. They highlighted that alongside more intense flooding, recent forest fires have made climate change impacts more tangible in Germany.
The researchers urged local governments to enhance early warning systems for forest fires, improve forest fire surveillance, and develop better firefighting methods.
