IKEA plans to launch a secondhand resale platform in Germany
In December, IKEA plans to globally launch IKEA Preowned, an online marketplace where customers can resell their unwanted furniture and homeware to each other.

The Swedish furniture giant IKEA has announced the upcoming launch of a secondhand online marketplace, IKEA Preowned, allowing customers to resell their IKEA items to each other. This platform aims to compete with popular secondhand marketplaces like Kleinanzeigen, Gumtree, and Facebook Marketplace, which are widely used for reselling in Germany and across Europe.
IKEA has stated that the platform is currently being trialed in Oslo and Madrid. "After December, we will evaluate and decide on the next steps. We start in Oslo and Madrid, yet our ambition is higher," said an IKEA spokesperson.
IKEA products, known for their affordability and ubiquity, are already prevalent on online resale platforms. For example, a search for "IKEA" on Kleinanzeigen in Germany yields over 466,000 results, filled with listings for popular items like KALLAX shelves and HEMNES drawers.
How Will IKEA Preowned Work?
Similar to other online marketplaces, sellers on IKEA Preowned will be able to upload pictures of their furniture and set a price. IKEA’s AI-enabled database will then provide promotional images and measurements for the listed items. Buyers can pick up the furniture directly from the seller, and sellers have the option of receiving payment in cash or an IKEA voucher, which will be worth 15% more than the selling price.
At launch, listings on the site will be free. However, Jesper Brodin, CEO of IKEA's main operator, Ingka, told the Financial Times that the company plans to eventually charge "a symbolic fee, a humble fee" for listings.
