Lithuania to Open Embassy in Singapore
Lithuania is set to inaugurate its embassy in Singapore, a move that will extend diverse services to the citizens of the Southeast Asian nation.
The decision was officially confirmed by Lithuania's Foreign Minister, Gabrielius Landsbergis. As part of his upcoming trips to Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia, Minister Landsbergis announced his visit to Singapore scheduled for Friday.
During his stay, he plans to engage in discussions with Singapore's Foreign Minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, and take part in the formal opening ceremony of Lithuania's embassy in Singapore. Presently, Singapore hosts a total of 73 resident foreign high commissions and embassies, along with 44 foreign consular posts and 14 International Organizations, as per the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Conversely, Lithuania has around 31 foreign embassies and ten consulates within its borders, and approximately 40 embassies and 17 consulates in other nations, offering a range of services.
The newly established embassy aims to deliver consular services and aid citizens in legal matters or emergencies. Singapore, being on the list of countries whose citizens are exempt from visa requirements for travel to Schengen Zone countries, benefits from Lithuania's membership in the borderless Schengen Area. This allows Singaporeans to visit Lithuania for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without requiring a visa.
From 2025 onwards, Singaporean citizens must obtain authorization through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before traveling to any Schengen or EU country. Both countries are actively exploring avenues to enhance cooperation, particularly in industries such as travel and tourism.
Tourist arrivals in Lithuania have seen an increase, reaching 301,800 in the first quarter of the current year compared to 284,000 in the preceding quarter, as reported by Trading Economics. Singapore, on the other hand, recorded a total of 6.3 million foreign visitor arrivals last year.
