Munich Airport Urges Passengers to Check for Possible Cancellation of Their Flight Due to Extreme Weather

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Munich Airport and Lufthansa have informed passengers about flight cancellations which were caused by extreme weather conditions.
  • More than a quarter of flights were cancelled, and many others have yet to be confirmed.
  • Passengers have taken to social media to express their concerns about flight cancellations.

Munich Airport and the German-based airline Lufthansa have advised passengers to stay updated about their flight status as most flights are not being operated due to heavy snowfall.

The airport has warned its passengers to stay home until they have had a confirmation that their flight will be operated in an effort to avoid the havoc caused by flight cancellations.

We therefore recommend you, if you are flying today or tomorrow, to check the status of your flight with your airline or contact the airline directly before arriving at the airport.

The same revealed that it is not possible to predict how the situation will unfold in the upcoming days but asked passengers of Lufthansa flights not to come to the airport unless their flight has been confirmed.

Euronews reports that Munich airport was closed on Saturday due to the heavy snowfall, and ever since, the runways have been reopened, starting with one yesterday and another one this morning. However, more than a quarter of today’s flights have been annulled.

The same reveals that of the 840 flights scheduled at the airport today, 230 have been cancelled. In addition, the airport’s Christmas market remains closed for the two upcoming days. A similar situation at the Munich airport occurred last year when 133 flight cancellations were recorded due to a frozen runway.

The flight schedule of Munich Airport shows that many flights were delayed hours later, which is the case of the flight to Prague, which was scheduled for 12:00 pm and departed at 02:00 pm.

For the remainder of the day, flights operated by Lufthansa that were headed to New York, Seoul, and Helsinki are boarding, while the one going to Chigaco has been cancelled. Lufthansa flights headed to Shanghai, which was scheduled for 10:05 pm, have also been annulled.

In addition, a flight directed from Munich to Tunis and operated by Tunisair has been cancelled.

Two more cancelled flights for today include the one operated by Emirates, headed to Dubai, and another one operated by Air Dolomiti headed to Blogona.

Passengers have voiced their displeasure with the flight operators and airports on social media, with an X (formerly Twitter) user asking for information.

Stranded in Munich since Thursday evening. Had to make our own arrangements for accommodation and have not been given our luggage. Now onboard flight LH1760; whilst being onboard, the flight was cancelled. PLEASE, can somebody tell us what is going on?

Lufthansa replied to the passengers, expressing their regret to inform them that the flight had been cancelled, while Evi asked to be informed of when their flight will be rebooked but did not receive an answer.

In order to avoid experiences such as Evi’s, travellers are encouraged to purchase travel insurance, which will protect them from unexpected experiences.

Heavy snowfall is listed under natural disasters, and there are also travel insurance alternatives that cover such situations. Some of the best deals to purchase travel insurance in case of natural disasters include AXA Travel Insurance, Europ Assistance, Allianz Travel Insurance, Mondial Care, Mutuaide, and DR-WALTER.
