Munich to Invest Million-Euro Fund in Turning Residents' Ideas Into Reality
Munich Launches New Initiative to Fund Resident-Driven City Improvements
The local government of Munich has introduced a new participatory scheme called “The Munich Budget”, inviting residents to propose ideas to enhance life in the city. Open to all residents aged 14 and above—including international citizens—this initiative gives the community a direct say in how the city evolves.
Submissions, which can be made in either German or English, are open until June 9. Proposals may include ideas like adding public toilets, installing picnic tables, or setting up outdoor libraries. Each project must stay within a €100,000 budget, avoid impacting protected conservation areas, and not require hiring permanent city staff.
Inspired by similar projects in Paris and Barcelona, The Munich Budget will run over a three-year period.
Citywide Voting Will Decide Which Projects Receive Funding
Once the proposal period ends, residents will vote for their favourite projects between June 17 and 30. City officials will then assess the financial and practical feasibility of the top-voted ideas. Approved projects will move on to a final voting round from October 15 to 31.
With a total fund of €1 million, the number of projects that can be implemented will depend on their individual costs.
