Nepal Bidding for Seats on UN Human Rights Council, ECOSOC, and Various UN Bodies
Nepal’s key bid is for a non-permanent membership on the UN Security Council for the 2037-38 term.
Additionally, Nepal is seeking re-election to several important UN positions, including the United Nations Human Rights Council and the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Nepal previously served two consecutive terms on the Human Rights Council, completing its second term in December 2023. "Having served two consecutive terms, we are taking a break for one term," said Amrit Rai, spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "We have already announced our candidacy for the 2027-2029 term." Nepal has begun lobbying for re-election under the Asia-Pacific region category.
The Human Rights Council, established in 2006 by the UN General Assembly, consists of 47 elected Member States distributed equitably among five regional groups: 13 seats for African States, 13 for Asia-Pacific States, 6 for Eastern European States, 8 for Latin American and Caribbean States, and 7 for Western European and other States.
Nepal also announced its candidacy for the ECOSOC term 2029-2031. Currently, Nepal serves a three-year term on ECOSOC for 2024-26, having been elected with the highest number of votes from the Asia-Pacific region in January 2023.
ECOSOC, one of the six main UN organs established by the UN Charter in 1945, serves as a central platform for debate, consensus-building, and coordination on socio-economic progress, including the Sustainable Development Goals.
Nepal is also vying for various other UN subsidiary positions. The most notable candidacy is for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2037-38. Nepal has announced this candidacy and begun lobbying efforts. The Security Council consists of five permanent members and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly.
Additionally, Nepal has announced its candidacies for:
- Vice President of ECOSOC, 2024-2025 (endorsed by the Asia-Pacific Group)
- Chair of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly, 81st session (2026-2027)
- Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), 2028-2031
- Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), 2028-2030
- Executive Board of UNICEF, 2027-2029
- Executive Board of UN Women, 2025-2027
- Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS, 2026-2028
- Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), 2025-2028
Nepal has already begun lobbying for these positions and garnered support from member states.
