Snowfall heading for German lowlands as temperature plummets
Dig out your best winter coat and crank up the heating, as the weather in Germany is going to suddenly turn quite chilly this weekend, with some meteorologists predicting lows as frigid as minus 10 degrees Celsius. Some snowflakes are also on the cards, even in big German cities, as the snow line falls lower and lower.
Snow to hit many parts of Germany over the weekend
With December right around the corner, a wet and mild November is finally giving way to some “proper” winter weather. The turnaround will be noticeable from Friday, which will bring a highly changeable mix of sun, clouds, showers and “sleet thunderstorms”, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).
Throughout the day, the snow line will be falling lower and lower, with small thunderstorms bringing bouts of sleet and snow to many parts of the country. Anywhere above 300 to 400 metres above sea level can expect to get a sprinkling of white. According to Dominik Jung, a meteorologist for wetter.net, the night of Saturday, November 25, could bring surprise snowfall to even lowland areas of Germany.
Temperatures to suddenly drop in coming days
The temperature is due to fall rapidly - down from highs of 4 to 13 degrees on Thursday, to 4 to 10 degrees on Friday, 0 to 7 degrees on Saturday, and -1 to 6 degrees on Sunday. The nights will be especially chilly, with lows of between -4 and 3 degrees predicted for Friday night, and -5 and 0 degrees on Saturday night. Most areas will wake up to a dusting of frost over the weekend, and in snow-covered areas, the temperature could dip to even -10 or -15 degrees overnight!
“We're starting December in a more wintery way than we've had in a long time. A decent blanket of snow will form in the mountains and in the Alps, which was rarely the case in previous years. What a winter comeback,” said Jung. He urged people to put on their winter tyres before driving, warning that road surfaces could be slippery, especially at night.
Looking further ahead, it will remain cool for the time being, with maximum temperatures hovering somewhere between 0 and 5 degrees. Some heavy snowfall is possible in the southern half of the country, but elsewhere the sun is expected to make an appearance.
