Study Reveals Younger Travelers Are Flocking to Lesser-Known European Destinations
Key Takeaways
1. A study reveals younger generations are showing a stronger interest in traveling in 2024.
2. They are favoring quieter, off-the-beaten-path destinations over crowded tourist hotspots.
3. Polish and Spanish travelers are the top nationalities preferring these peaceful locales.
Younger travelers are increasingly drawn to lesser-known spots in Europe, moving away from traditional tourist hubs. While Spain and France continue to be favored destinations, their major tourist attractions are no longer the primary draw.
According to research by the European Travel Commission (ETC), 73% of respondents from European countries plan to travel in the coming months, indicating a significant appetite for exploration.
Miguel Sanz, President of the ETC, highlighted the strong enthusiasm among Europeans eager for new vacations after the summer season. This growing interest in hidden destinations offers fresh opportunities for lesser-known areas, promoting responsible tourism, supporting local economies, and preserving cultural heritage.
Travel intent is highest among UK respondents (84%), followed by Germany (79%) and France (78%), showing a rise in interest compared to 2023.
Study Highlights Travel Interest Growth, Especially Among Young Adults
The ETC study reveals younger generations are more enthusiastic about traveling than older ones. Those aged 25 to 34 show a 75% travel intent, a 9% increase from last year. This group is particularly interested in city breaks and relaxing beach vacations.
Older travelers are also planning more trips than before, with a focus on week-long stays and experiences tied to culture and nature. Unlike younger travelers, they remain loyal to popular destinations.
France & Spain Continue to Lead as Favorite Destinations
France and Spain remain top choices for travelers, with 7% of respondents eyeing them for their next trip. Italy follows closely with 6%, while Germany, Austria, and Greece trail behind at 5%.
Over half of the respondents (51%) are interested in avoiding crowded places, opting for lesser-known destinations. Among Europeans, Polish travelers are the most likely to seek quieter spots (50%), followed by Spaniards (45%) and Dutch (44%).
