Bangladesh to Plant 8.33 Crore Trees This Monsoon, Announces Environment Secretary
The government has initiated a plan to plant 8.33 crore trees nationwide during this monsoon season, as stated by Farhina Ahmed, the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Ahmed highlighted that the government aims to increase the land area covered by trees to 22.37 percent to 25 percent, while elevating forest coverage from 14.1 percent to 16 percent.
Speaking at a press briefing on the occasion of World Environment Day and the National Tree Plantation and Tree Fair program, Ahmed emphasized the significant scale of tree planting efforts for forest conservation, biodiversity preservation, and wildlife protection across the country.
She further elaborated that a total of 2,17,402 hectares of blocks and 30,252 km of seedling strip gardens have been established, with 11.21 crore saplings distributed and planted from the fiscal year 2009-10 to 2022-23. Additionally, approximately 89,853 hectares of coastal land have been brought under forestation initiatives.
As in previous years, World Environment Day will be observed nationwide, aligning with global celebrations, under the theme "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.
