For travelers seeking a short-term visa allowing multiple entries into Schengen Area countries, applying for a German Schengen visa is the best option. Despite being the second most popular Schengen destination, Germany maintains a high rate of multiple-entry visa issuance. According to newly released Schengen Visa Statistics, 90.4% of visas issued by German consulates in 2023 were multiple-entry, only slightly down from 90.6% in 2022.

In 2023, Germany received 1,459,560 visa applications and approved 1,233,561, of which 1,115,424 were multiple-entry visas.

Other Schengen Countries with High Multiple-Entry Visa Issuance Rates

Other Schengen countries also exceed the EU average in issuing multiple-entry visas. Austria ranks second with 75.7% of its visas being multiple-entry. In 2023, Austria approved 194,273 out of 229,613 applications, with 147,021 being multiple-entry. Italy follows, issuing 70.2% of its 970,073 visas as multiple-entry.

The ranking continues with:

  • Switzerland: 69.1% of 506,499 applications approved
  • Greece: 66.1% of 521,825 applications approved
  • Croatia: 62% of 29,785 visas granted

In contrast, Slovenia and Estonia, which had higher issuance rates in 2022, saw a decrease in 2023, with rates of 59.7% and 60%, respectively.

Countries with the Lowest Chances of Obtaining a Multiple-Entry Schengen Visa

In 2023, fewer multiple-entry visas were issued across the Schengen Area compared to 2022. The average MEV issuance rate dropped from 58.1% in 2022 to 54.2% in 2023. The countries with the lowest multiple-entry visa issuance rates were:

- Norway: 22.6%
- Sweden: 25.7%
- Spain: 27.2%

Germany’s Rejection Rate Below EU Average

Germany not only excels in issuing multiple-entry visas but also has a relatively low visa rejection rate. In 2023, Germany rejected only 14.3% of visa applications, lower than the Schengen average of 16%.
