In recent times, there has been a noticeable surge in Swiss citizens choosing to settle overseas, with a significant inclination towards Europe as their preferred destination. According to a report from the Swiss Federal Council, by the end of 2023, the population of Swiss nationals living abroad had exceeded 813,400 individuals. This marks an increase of 13,400 Swiss citizens relocating abroad in the past year, representing a 1.7 percent rise compared to 2022.
The majority of Swiss expatriates reside in Europe, with 520,700 out of the 813,400 living abroad located in the EU, constituting 64 percent of the total. Among EU nations, France accommodates the largest Swiss immigrant community, hosting 209,300 individuals, followed by Germany (99,600), Italy (52,000), the United Kingdom (40,200), and Spain (26,500). Remarkably, the number of Swiss nationals residing in these countries increased compared to 2022, with Spain experiencing the highest growth rate at 2.7 percent, followed by France and Italy at 1.4 percent. Despite hosting a smaller Swiss population (6,900), Portugal observed one of the highest growth rates among EU countries in 2023, recording a growth rate of 13.9 percent.
In addition to Europe, data from the Council reveals that around 292,700 Swiss citizens reside on continents other than Europe. North America boasts the largest Swiss expatriate community, with 83,700 Swiss nationals in the United States alone, comprising one-tenth of the Swiss expatriate population. Furthermore, 41,500 Swiss citizens live in Canada.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, Argentina is home to the most Swiss nationals (15,100), followed by Brazil (13,600) and Chile (5,700). Notably, a significant portion of Swiss citizens in Argentina hold multiple citizenships. In Asia, Israel accommodates the largest Swiss community (23,700), followed by Thailand (10,400) and the Philippines (3,600). Australia hosts the most Swiss nationals (26,400) in Oceania, while South Africa has the largest Swiss community (7,700) in Africa.
France, the US, Argentina, Australia, and Israel have remained the leading residences for Swiss citizens between 2022 and 2023, witnessing an increase in the number of Swiss residents during this period, with the highest growth rate recorded in Israel at 3.6 percent. However, there has been a decrease in the number of Swiss nationals residing in South Africa.
Regarding age distribution, 21 percent of Swiss citizens abroad are under 18, 56 percent are between 18 and 64, and 23 percent are 65 or older. The number of older adults increased by 3.9 percent compared to 2022, with significant rises noted in Portugal and Thailand.
