Gohar Ali Khan has been re-elected as the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has been re-elected as the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), marking his second tenure in the party's leadership role. PTI confirmed Khan's election after the withdrawal phase of candidates, leaving him as the sole contender for the position.
Simultaneously, Omar Ayub Khan secured the position of PTI's central general secretary. Additionally, Yasmin Rashid, Ali Amin Gandapur, and Haleem Adil Sheikh were elected as presidents of the party for Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh, respectively, as no other contenders emerged to challenge them.
The position of Balochistan president in PTI remains vacant, awaiting intra-party elections scheduled to take place in Quetta. The final outcome of the election will be announced by the Federal Election Commissioner on March 3, 2024.
These internal elections occurred following a Supreme Court decision upholding the Election Commission of Pakistan's ruling on PTI's internal election process, which led to the party losing its electoral bat symbol. Last year, Imran Khan, the party's founder, stepped down as PTI chief to avoid legal complications and nominated Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as his successor.
The intra-party polls conducted on December 2, 2023, under the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan, faced irregularities, resulting in PTI's disqualification from using its 'bat' symbol for the February 8 election. Despite securing a majority of seats, PTI opted to sit on the opposition benches rather than forming a coalition government with rivals such as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
PTI-affiliated candidates have aligned with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) to retain reserved seats in the lower house of parliament and provincial assemblies. Meanwhile, PTI founding member Akbar S Babar, who previously contested the party's internal polls in the Election Commission of Pakistan, intends to challenge the latest elections conducted by the PTI leadership.
