A new series of strikes by DB and Lufthansa is scheduled to commence on March 12th.
A fresh wave of strikes from Deutsche Bahn train drivers and Lufthansa cabin crew is set to disrupt transportation in Germany this week. Here's what passengers need to know:
1. New GDL Strike:
- The German Train Drivers’ Union (GDL) has declared that union member drivers will initiate another warning strike at 2 am on March 12, 2024. The strike will extend for 24 hours, concluding at 2 am on March 13.
- While freight transport will be impacted a few hours earlier, the strike's effects on passenger transport will be during these hours. Long-distance trains operated by Deutsche Bahn, regional trains, and S-Bahn services will be affected in cities and towns nationwide. However, U-Bahn and tram services will remain unaffected.
- This marks the sixth strike since November and the second since the GDL-Deutsche Bahn peace deal ended last week. Negotiations between GDL and Deutsche Bahn regarding new pay and working conditions have been ongoing, with the company's reluctance to reduce working hours for employees cited as a major point of contention.
- GDL leader Claus Weselsky stated last week that due to Deutsche Bahn's perceived lack of serious negotiation, the union would no longer adhere to the 48-hour announcement rule before strikes. Unless an agreement is reached, further strikes are anticipated in the coming weeks.
2. Lufthansa Cabin Crew Strike:
- Concurrently, the Independent Cabin Crew Organisation (UFO) union in Germany has called for a strike by Lufthansa cabin crew on March 12 and 13.
- The strike is anticipated to involve approximately 19,000 employees and will impact Frankfurt Airport on March 12 and Munich Airport on March 13, lasting from 4 am to 11 pm each day. Lufthansa has announced that affected passengers will have their flights rescheduled for different dates.
- Following a recent warning strike by Lufthansa ground staff, cabin crew members are joining them - along with numerous other workers in Germany - in the strike action. UFO is demanding a 15 percent pay increase for cabin crew over the next 18 months, along with a 3,000 euros inflation compensation payment for certain members.
- This demand follows Lufthansa's announcement on March 7 of a 2.7 billion euros profit in 2023, marking the third-best financial result in the history of the Lufthansa Group.
