India Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 : PM Modi hails 'historic feat' as BJP depends on allies to form government
‘Kingmakers’ JD(U) and TDP to attend NDA meeting; INDIA bloc to take call on approaching former partners
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is headed towards a third consecutive term with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leading in 292 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. But the ruling alliance's margin was narrower than what the exit polls had predicted. The opposition INDIA alliance mounted a fierce challenge and are ahead on 233 seats, falling just 39 seats short of the halfway mark needed to form the government.
The Narendra Modi-led ruling party will likely fail to attain a simple majority in the 543-member Lok Sabha, and depend on TDP and JD(U) to form a government. Meanwhile, the Congress won 66 seats and is leading in 33 whereas, the JD(S), Trinamool Congress, AAP and Samajwadi Party won 2, 16, 3 and 24 seats respectively. Akhilesh Yadav’s stock rose dramatically with his Samajwadi Party cutting the ruling BJP down to size in Uttar Pradesh.
In a major upset in the Faizabad parliamentary constituency, where the temple town of Ayodhya is situated, Samajwadi Party candidate Awadhesh Prasad defeated sitting BJP MP Lallu Singh by a margin of 54,567 votes. Meanwhile, N. Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP put up a good show in the Lok Sabha polls, won five seats and is leading in 11 of the total 25 seats in the State. Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh by over 1.5 lakh votes against Congress’s Ajay Rai. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi won both Kerala’s Wayanad and Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seats by over three lakh votes against his rival candidates.
NDA’s victory is people’s blessings for PM Modi, says Amit Shah
The NDA’s victory in the Lok Sabha polls is the “blessing of people” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has worked hard over the past 10 years to fulfil the dreams of the poor, women, backward and the youth, Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday.
He also said this is the victory of Mr. Modi’s marathon effort in the last 23 years of public life, without taking a single day off, without caring for himself, and working day and night only for the welfare of the country and the countrymen.
He said the third consecutive victory has made it clear that the public’s trust is “only with Modi”.
INDIA alliance leaders will meet tomorrow to decide on PM face: Uddhav Thackeray
Buoyed by the INDIA bloc’s show in the Lok Sabha polls, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray pushed for staking a claim to form the next government at the Centre and said the Opposition alliance’s leaders will meet on June 4 in New Delhi to decide on the Prime Minister’s face.
Addressing a news conference after results and trends showed the BJP will miss the simple majority mark of 272 seats, Mr. Thackeray said leaders of the Congress and other parties are holding talks with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Telegu Desam Party (TDP) head Chandrababu Naidu to explore the possibility of their entry into the bloc.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today thanked the people of the country, for "restoring their faith" in the BJP as the party looks set to form the government at the Centre for a third successive term.
