India - Torrential Rain Causes Chaos in Kerala: At Least 4 Dead, IMD Issues ‘Orange’ Alert
On Wednesday, a cyclonic circulation was observed over southern Kerala, and a low-pressure area formed over the southwest near the west-central Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to move northeastwards and intensify into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by Friday, then move towards the northeast and northwest Bay of Bengal by Saturday.
In the past few days, torrential rains have caused significant disruption in Kerala, resulting in at least four deaths. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the districts of Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on Thursday. This alert indicates the need for preparedness due to potential waterlogging and major traffic disruptions. Additionally, a yellow alert was issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Kannur, and Kasargod districts, indicating a warning for heavy rainfall.
The southwest monsoon advanced into parts of the South Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin, and the south Bay of Bengal, as well as the Andaman and Nicobar islands, and the Andaman Sea on Wednesday. The cyclonic circulation over southern Kerala and the low-pressure area near the west-central Bay of Bengal are expected to shift northeastwards, intensifying into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by Friday and moving towards the northeast and northwest Bay of Bengal by Saturday.
Heavy rains have inundated areas within the Cochin city corporation, homes, and major roads in Ernakulam, as well as low-lying areas of Thrissur city. With the increased risk of landslides and mudslides, emergency operation centers have been activated in all district collectorates and taluk offices. Hospitals have been alerted and stocked with supplies to prepare for potential epidemic outbreaks caused by the ongoing heavy rains.
Health Minister Veena George announced on Monday that the Health Department has issued warnings to all districts about the possible outbreak of epidemics due to continuous heavy rains. Revenue Minister K Rajan stated that special instructions have been given to alert tourists about the current rain situation, emphasizing the need for strict regulations in landslide-prone hilly areas.
Following the IMD's warning of extremely heavy rain and a red alert for some districts from May 18 to May 20, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan urged residents in hilly and low-lying areas to relocate to safer locations. He also directed that trees should be trimmed and potentially dangerous posts and boards in both public and private areas should be secured.
