Record Year for Irish Citizenship Decisions
The Irish Department of Justice processed more than 30,000 citizenship applications in 2024, setting a new record. This marks a notable rise from the 20,000 applications decided in 2023.
As reported by INL, over 6,000 individuals from 140 countries will officially become Irish citizens during seven ceremonies on December 2 and 3. These events will be presided over by Justice Paddy McMahon and former President of the High Court, Mary Irvine.
Minister of Justice Helen McEntee congratulated the new citizens and their families, emphasizing their vital role in building inclusive communities and contributing to sectors like construction, agriculture, and healthcare.
"Our new citizens play an essential role in fuelling economic growth, addressing labour shortages, and enriching our workforce with diversity and inclusion," McEntee stated.
Streamlining the Citizenship Application Process
In 2024, Ireland introduced several reforms to expedite and simplify the citizenship application process. These include:
- Launching a digital platform for online applications.
- Enabling online payments and eVetting.
- Maintaining a paper-based application option for those without digital access.
Minister McEntee highlighted that modernizing the process aligns with her goal of creating a fair and efficient immigration system:
"One of my strategic priorities is to deliver a fair and balanced immigration system fit for the digital age. Accelerating digital transformation across the justice sector is key to ensuring modern and accessible services."
In a related move, Irish authorities announced that as of November 4, 2024, all residence permit renewals for internationals must also be processed online, further streamlining immigration services.
