  1. Major Changes Ahead: The European Union is set to implement several new travel and residency policies starting in 2025.
  2. Schengen Area Expansion: Bulgaria and Romania will join as full Schengen members on January 1, 2025.
  3. Travel Systems Launch: The EU will introduce the Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) next year.
  4. Golden Visa Program Updates: Greece will expand its program to include startup investments, while Spain debates ending Golden Visas tied to property purchases.

Highlights of the Upcoming Changes

Schengen Expansion

  • From January 1, 2025, Bulgaria and Romania will fully integrate into the Schengen Area. This inclusion will remove internal border checks with neighboring Schengen countries, enhancing free movement for residents and travelers.

New Border Systems: EES & ETIAS

  • EES will replace manual passport stamping and streamline border checks. Registration will be conducted at EU external borders.
  • ETIAS will apply to visa-exempt travelers, requiring prior authorization for entry into the Schengen Area. This system will affect travelers from over 60 countries.

Golden Visa Program Adjustments

  • Greece will introduce a new investment route focused on startups. Eligibility includes a minimum €250,000 investment and job creation.
  • Spain is considering ending Golden Visas for property investment, pending the resolution of legislative debates.

Tourist Tax Increases

  • Madeira, Portugal, will extend a €3 hiking fee to all trails, while Évora plans to introduce a tourist tax in 2025.
  • Venice, Italy, will double its tourist tax on certain days to €10, targeting last-minute visitors.
  • Greece will raise its daily tourist tax from €0.5 to €2 and further increase cruise ship and high-season taxes.

Residence Permit Requirements in France

  • Applicants for multi-year residence cards will need A2-level language proficiency, while those seeking 10-year permits must meet B1-level proficiency.

UK Travel Authorization for EU Citizens

  • Starting April 2025, EU citizens traveling to the UK without a visa must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for €11. This document, valid for two years, will allow multiple entries with a maximum stay of 60 days per visit.

These changes mark a significant shift in EU policies, aiming to enhance security, streamline procedures, and adapt to evolving international travel demands.
