Modi 3.0: 72 Ministers Sworn In, Including 9 New Cabinet Members
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with 71 ministers of the new coalition government, took the oath of office today. Among them are 30 Cabinet Ministers, five with independent charge, and 36 Ministers of State. The portfolios will be announced later.
At 73, PM Modi begins his third term, Modi 3.0, marking the first coalition government since he became Prime Minister in 2014 after a major victory following a decade of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) rule. He is the second Prime Minister, after Jawaharlal Nehru, to be elected for three consecutive terms.
The ceremony took place on the lawns of Rashtrapati Bhavan, with temperatures expected to reach 42 degrees Celsius in the national capital.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to PM Modi. Following him, Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Nitin Gadkari took their oaths. Other prominent leaders such as JP Nadda, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Nirmala Sitharaman, S Jaishankar, and Manohar Lal Khattar also took their oaths.
HD Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular) was the first leader from any BJP ally in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to take the oath. Lalan Singh from the Janata Dal (United), a close aide of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, followed.
From the northeast, Sarbananda Sonowal and Kiren Rijiju took their oaths. Virendra Kumar, a notable Scheduled Castes representative and eight-time MP from Madhya Pradesh's Tikamgarh reserved seat, was also inducted.
Supporters cheered as each leader approached the stage to be sworn in by the President. Jyotiraditya Scindia’s inclusion solidified his significance in the BJP after his departure from Congress four years ago, marking his second term in the Union cabinet.
Former diplomat Hardeep Singh Puri, who helped India through two oil crises, was among the ministers sworn in. Chirag Paswan, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief, made a significant comeback by joining the Modi government, affirming his role as his father’s political heir in Bihar.
Leaders from neighboring countries and the Indian Ocean Region, including Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, attended the ceremony.
