OpenAI to Establish First German Office in Munich
The San Francisco-based tech company OpenAI, known for developing ChatGPT, has announced plans to open its first office in Germany, located in Munich.
OpenAI Expands to Munich
OpenAI, the US-based artificial intelligence firm, has confirmed its expansion into Germany with a new office in Munich, Bavaria.
"Germany is recognized for its technical expertise, academic excellence, and industrial innovation," said CEO Sam Altman. "By opening our first office in Germany, we aim to help more individuals, businesses, and institutions harness the potential of AI."
According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany has the highest number of ChatGPT users in Europe and ranks fifth globally. The number of German users tripled in 2024 alone.
While OpenAI has already begun recruiting engineers in Munich, details about the exact location and opening date of the office remain unclear. The Bavarian capital is already home to major US tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Intel.
Munich Positioned as an AI Hub in Europe
Discussions between OpenAI and German authorities regarding the Munich office have been ongoing since 2023.
Following OpenAI’s confirmation, Bavarian Economy Minister Markus Blume (CSU) stated that the city is on track to becoming the “AI Mecca of Europe.”
In addition to its Munich office, OpenAI also announced plans to expand into Brussels, Dublin, Paris, and Zurich in late 2024.
