Poland introduces the "Refugeebook" application to assist asylum seekers.
Poland has introduced a specialized application called Refugeebook to assist individuals who have applied for asylum within the country. Developed by the Office for Foreigners (UDSC), the app offers guidance on rights and responsibilities, necessary documentation for protection status, and sources of social and medical support. Available in Polish, English, Russian, and Ukrainian, Refugeebook also offers educational resources covering Polish history and culture, along with information on NGOs providing aid to foreigners in Poland.
Access to the app is granted only after applying for international protection in Poland, offering easier access to crucial information during the application process. However, the app does not allow for the submission of asylum applications, which must be done upon entry to the country.
While awaiting decisions, applicants can access social assistance, including housing, food, and medical care, provided by the UDSC, as well as educational activities such as Polish language classes.
In the first quarter of the current year, nearly 3,000 individuals applied for international protection in Poland, a notable increase compared to the total of 9,500 applications received in 2023. The majority of applicants in 2023 were from Belarus, followed by Ukrainians and Russians.
Poland has been commended for welcoming refugees from neighboring Ukraine and Belarus but has also faced criticism for its tough stance on migrants and asylum seekers attempting to cross the border from Belarus. The country has been accused of violating international law through the practice of "pushbacks," returning individuals who cross the border illegally to Belarus. However, Polish authorities assert their responsibility to protect the border, which serves as the eastern frontier of both the EU and NATO.
