Qatar Fund for Development and UN Office Sign $10 Million Agreement
The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has signed a $10 million contribution agreement with the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
The funding will support UN-OHRLLS in overseeing and tracking the implementation of the Doha Programme of Action (2023-2031). This contribution is part of Qatar’s larger $60 million commitment, announced during the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries.
Present at the signing ceremony were Minister of State for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs HE Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater, Acting Director General of QFFD Sultan bin Ahmed Al Aseeri, and UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States, HE Rabab Fatima.
The Doha Programme of Action is designed to address the specific challenges faced by Least Developed Countries (LDCs) by promoting sustainable development, fostering economic growth, and building resilience. Key initiatives include developing mechanisms to combat food insecurity and establishing a facility to support the smooth transition of countries from the LDC category.
Al Aseeri emphasized that Qatar’s continued support for UN-OHRLLS reflects its commitment to empowering vulnerable nations, strengthening the Office's capacity to address the challenges faced by LDCs, and fostering global cooperation for inclusive and sustainable development.
Fatima expressed her gratitude to QFFD, noting, "The Qatar Fund for Development’s support is crucial for helping 1.1 billion people across 45 LDCs achieve peace, progress, and prosperity, particularly in line with the key outcomes of the Doha Programme of Action."
Qatar's $60 million contribution, announced last year, allocates $10 million to monitoring and follow-up efforts to ensure timely implementation of the Doha Programme of Action. The partnership will also focus on strengthening institutional capacities and utilizing innovative solutions to address the complex challenges faced by LDCs.
