Romanians Granted Visa-Free Travel to the US Starting March 31, 2025
As of March 31, 2025, Romanian citizens will be eligible for visa-free travel to the United States for stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes.
Romania’s inclusion in the US Visa Waiver Program was formally confirmed on January 10, 2025, by the Romanian Ambassador to the US, Andrei Muraru. With this milestone, Romania becomes the 43rd country to join the program, symbolizing the growing strength of Romania-US relations.
“The federal government has officially welcomed Romania into the Visa Waiver Program. From March 31, Romanians will be able to travel to the US without visas, marking a significant moment for our country,” said Ambassador Muraru.
He described this as an important achievement in Romania’s Euro-Atlantic journey and emphasized that the decision reflects the deepening bond between the two nations.
ESTA Expansion to Include Romania
The US Customs and Border Protection will update the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) to accommodate Romanian travelers by late March 2025. ESTA applications will be available online or via the ESTA mobile app, with authorizations valid for two years.
Travelers with valid B-1/B-2 visas may continue using them for travel to the US, as these visas will remain an option for Romanian citizens.
Enhanced Reciprocity
US citizens already benefit from visa-free travel to Romania for stays of up to 90 days, provided their passports remain valid for at least three months beyond their arrival date.
This development represents the culmination of years of collaboration between Romanian and US officials, strengthening ties while also promising to enhance investment, trade, and tourism opportunities.
