Russia has prohibited entry to its territory for Ukrainians using border crossings in Finland.
Ukrainians are now restricted from entering Russia through border crossings in Finland, following the decision of Russian authorities to impose a ban on such entries.
As clarified, Ukrainians are now restricted to entering Russia solely through the Vientuli border crossing point in Latvia or via Moscow airport.
According to Yle, the announcement of Russia's decision to disallow Ukrainians from entering its territory via Finland was made by the Russian Ministry of Transport, drawing condemnation from Finnish authorities.
News of the ban quickly reached Ukrainian travelers. Jukka Lukkari, the deputy commander of the Southeast Finnish Border Guard, disclosed that on October 16, only two Ukrainian citizens attempted to reach Russia through the border crossing points in southeastern Finland. However, he couldn't confirm whether these individuals were granted permission to cross the border.
As explained by Yle, the majority of passenger traffic between Finland and Russia occurs through the Imatra, Nuijamaa, and Vaalimaa border crossings. Data from the Border Guard of Southeast Finland indicates that a total of 778 Ukrainian citizens entered Russia through these three border crossing points in the past week.
Regarding the previous month, the Border Guard reported that approximately 1,860 Ukrainian citizens entered Russia through the border crossings in southeast Finland.
Presently, a substantial number of Ukrainian citizens reside in Finland, Russia, and territories under Russian occupation. Ukrainians intending to enter Ukraine are required to traverse third countries, with Finland being one of the transit options.
In September, the Finnish Ministry of Interior reported that approximately 63,700 Ukrainian citizens had been granted temporary protection in Finland since February 2022.
Additionally, the Ministry emphasized that there are roughly 37,700 Ukrainians in the Finnish reception center.
Given the ongoing situation in Ukraine, the Ministry affirmed that Finland will extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2024.
In accordance with the Council decision, temporary protection is granted to people who have been forced to leave Ukraine as a result of Russia’s invasion, which began on 24 February 2022.

Temporary protection aims to guarantee a harmonized status as well as rights for all Ukrainians in the EU Member States. Additionally, the temporary protection mechanism also prevents the need to immediately apply for international protection, reducing the pressure on the asylum systems of the Member States.
