Schiphol Airport Cautions About Delays Following 135 Flight Landings Due to Weather Conditions

Key Points

  1. Storm Darragh disrupted operations at Schiphol Airport, causing 135 flights to be cancelled and 275 delayed as of December 6.
  2. Dutch airline KLM was the hardest hit, canceling 90 flights, while other major carriers like Vueling, British Airways, and Lufthansa were also affected.
  3. Schiphol has urged passengers to plan ahead, considering both weather-related disruptions and the closure of the A10 south motorway until Monday.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has cautioned passengers about continued delays and cancellations due to Storm Darragh, which has heavily impacted air traffic. On December 6 alone, 135 flights were cancelled and 275 delayed, according to Schengen.News.

The airport has advised travelers to allow extra time for their journeys, especially given the ongoing closure of the A10 south motorway, which may further complicate access to the airport.

Airlines Face Significant Disruptions

KLM, which operates a large number of flights out of Schiphol, cancelled 90 flights due to the weather. Other airlines, including Air France, British Airways, Finnair, Lufthansa, Delta, and Vueling, also had to adjust their schedules.

Schiphol’s Growing Popularity and Challenges

Ranked as the 14th busiest airport globally by Airports Council International, Schiphol saw a significant increase in traffic in 2024, with 108,000 flights between January and September, up 18.5% from 2023. Passenger numbers also rose by 17.4%, reaching 14.4 million.

However, despite its growth, Schiphol has faced criticism for its infrastructure and rising fees. Social media users have voiced frustrations about broken escalators, elevators, and leaking roofs, along with an 80% increase in port fees over two years.

“Schiphol has become an expensive, shabby mess,” commented a user on the X platform, highlighting dissatisfaction with the airport’s condition.

Another netizen stressed the importance of fixing basic amenities, such as elevators and toilets, to improve the airport experience.
