Severe Snowfall Disrupts Transportation in Southern Germany
Heavy Snowfall Causes Widespread Disruptions in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg
Deutsche Bahn Reports Train Disruptions Across Two States
Southern Germany has been severely impacted by heavy snowfall, disrupting public transport, triggering multiple road accidents, and causing a motorway standstill. Deutsche Bahn announced Friday morning that long-distance train services between Stuttgart and Frankfurt to Paris are suspended until further notice due to adverse weather conditions affecting southern Germany and France.
The snowfall, which began Thursday, brought chaos to Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, France, and Switzerland. On the A98 motorway near Lörrach in Baden-Württemberg, around 150 cars were stranded overnight due to heavy snow, according to Freiburg police.
Over 200 road accidents were reported between the Black Forest and Lake Constance. Traffic came to a standstill on several stretches of the A81 motorway, including sections between Würzburg and Switzerland, Schaffhausen and Singen, and Stuttgart and Heilbronn near the Engelbergtunnel.
German Weather Service Warns of Ongoing Hazardous Conditions
The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned that snowy and icy conditions in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are expected to persist, posing “life-threatening risks.”
Lower altitudes will experience more snow, coupled with windy and changeable weather, while snowfall in the Alps is predicted to ease gradually.
