New Single Permit Directive
The new EU Single Permit Directive will be implemented on May 20, 2024. This directive will allow foreigners to receive work and residence permits through a simplified process. According to Spain's Social Security and Migration Ministry, these more favorable rules will benefit workers from other countries.
Foreign workers will now be able to secure a permit that serves both as a residence and work permit without enduring prolonged and stringent procedures. The new directive will simplify the application process for single permits, even during periods of unemployment.
Foreign workers will be allowed to remain in the country longer while job hunting. Additionally, third-country nationals can apply for a single permit without leaving an EU member state, provided they hold a residence permit there.
Implementation of New Directive
The new single permit directive will enhance the protection of foreign workers against exploitation. Member states will not be permitted to impose strict regulations on the rights and working conditions of foreign workers. Furthermore, each member state must ensure that foreign workers receive equal treatment to EU workers.
Once the directive is in effect, EU member states will have two years to implement the necessary changes to their national laws.
