Warsaw University has temporarily suspended a Norwegian student for displaying a banner with the message "Keep world clean" during a march for Palestine.
The Medical University of Warsaw (WUM) has taken disciplinary action against a Norwegian student who participated in a pro-Palestine march in the Polish capital. The student was photographed holding a banner featuring the Israeli flag being discarded in a bin with the words "Keep the world clean."
The university's rector, Zbigniew Gaciong, emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for hate speech or violence at the institution. Following an investigation, the student was promptly suspended, and the incident was reported to the police.
Rector Gaciong further revealed that an inquiry was initiated into four other students accused of sharing potentially unlawful content on social media, emphasizing the university's prohibition of hate speech. He assured support for those affected by the ongoing conflict and emphasized the university's commitment to being a tolerant and multicultural community that encourages diverse viewpoints with respect for human dignity.
During the march, the student with the banner, interviewed by social media channel Nexta, clarified that her intention was not directed at Jews but was a critique of the Israeli government's actions toward the Palestinian people. Despite this explanation, Israel's ambassador to Poland labeled the banner as "blatant antisemitism," prompting President Andrzej Duda to strongly condemn antisemitic slogans during the march.
Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski emphasized that hatred and antisemitism have no place in Warsaw and warned against materials inciting hatred ahead of another pro-Palestinian march. Polish law deems inciting hatred based on religious, ethnic, or national differences a crime, punishable by up to two years in prison. Despite criticism, both the mayor and the police did not intervene during the march, with prosecutors currently investigating the case under the authority of the justice minister and prosecutor general, Zbigniew Ziobro. Charges have not yet been filed.
