An ETC official states that the digitization of Schengen visa applications will have a transformative impact.
Key Points
Teodora Marinska, an ETC official, highlighted that the digitalization of Schengen visa applications will streamline travel to the Schengen Area. She emphasized that this transition will significantly benefit both travelers and member states. With the visa application process moving online, applicants will have the convenience of completing the entire procedure from their homes.
Teodora Marinska, the Chief Operating Officer and Head of Public Affairs at the European Travel Commission, emphasized that the digitalization of Schengen visa applications will enhance accessibility and convenience for foreigners visiting the bloc.
During the Arabian Travel Market held in Dubai on Monday, Marinska underscored the challenge faced by foreigners seeking Schengen Area visas, often struggling to secure available appointment slots due to overwhelming demand. She also noted instances where applicants opt for embassies of Schengen countries with easier procedures or due to limited availability in their intended destination.
Considering these hurdles, Marinska highlighted the transformative potential of digitalization, offering a streamlined process for visa applicants and automatic appointment allocation.
Digitalization is pivotal in this context. I believe we possess the tools to create an exceptionally smooth travel experience for individuals in the near future solely through digital visas.
Teodora Marinska, Chief Operating Officer and Head of Public Affairs at the European Travel Commission, emphasized that upon the transition to online processing, EU authorities must ensure the avoidance of border delays and prevent any additional burdens on transportation operators.
What Will Change with the Full Digitalization of Schengen Visa Application?
Once the Schengen visa application process becomes fully digitalized, except for first-time applicants, individuals will be able to complete all procedures online through a single platform.
Eliminating the need for physical visits to embassies or consulates will substantially reduce costs for applicants, as they will only need to cover the visa fee.
Furthermore, with the entire application process moving online, applicants will no longer need to gather and print extensive documentation.
On the platform, they will have the capability to upload electronic copies of their travel and accompanying documents and make the required payment.
According to EU authorities, individuals who need to appear physically for the application include first-time applicants, those with invalid biometric data, and individuals with a new travel document.
However, with the transition to online processing, those who require physical presence at the consulate, embassy, or visa center will not encounter prolonged wait times.
All visa applicants will also have the opportunity to specify on the platform their preference for the processing of their visa application by a particular member state.
Upon completion of the entire process by the applicants and the relevant authorities of the Schengen member states, applicants will receive notification of the decision on their application through the same platform.
Visas will be issued in a digital format and presented as a 2D barcode, with cryptographic signing.
