The EU Commission has officially confirmed the launch date for the new Entry/Exit System (EES).
In a recent speech at eu-LISA, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson announced that the EES will go live on November 10, 2024. This confirmation marks the first official declaration of the EES implementation date.
Following extensive discussions with Member States and stakeholders, Johansson revealed, “After thorough legal and procedural steps, I am proud to announce that November 10 is the confirmed launch date.”
Alongside the confirmation, Johansson indicated that the system is currently undergoing final testing phases.
Impact on Travellers
Once operational, the EES will affect approximately 700 million people travelling to Europe annually, according to Johansson. She emphasized that the system will enhance safety for 450 million European residents.
About the EES
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated IT system designed to register non-EU travellers entering the EU for short stays. It will replace the current manual passport stamping process, recording details such as the traveller’s name, type of travel document, biometric data (fingerprints and facial images), and the date and place of entry and exit.
The EES will also document entry refusals and aims to modernize border management, prevent irregular migration, and protect European citizens. It will assist in identifying overstayers and individuals attempting to enter with forged documents.
Once implemented, all non-EU travellers will need to register in the EES. Traveller data will be stored securely for three years, eliminating the need for repeated registration upon each entry and exit.
