Berlin’s free museum visit scheme to continue until 2025

Berlin’s monthly Museum Sundays event will continue throughout 2024 and 2025, the local government has announced, allowing anyone a free visit to one of the city’s 60 museums on the first Sunday of every month.

Berlin Senator Chialo announces Museum Sunday will continue

Originally announced in 2019 but then postponed due to the pandemic, Berlin’s admission-free Museum Sundays scheme started in 2021.

Culture Senator for Berlin Joe Chialo (CDU) has now announced that the scheme, which allows anyone - tourist or local - to visit 60 of Berlin’s museums for free on the first Sunday of the month, will be funded in 2024 and 2025.

Famous favourites such as the Altes Museum, the Gemäldegalerie and the Pergamon Museum, as well as smaller museums like the Werkbundarchiv, the Decorative Arts Museum, and the Knoblauchhaus Museum, are all included in the scheme.

In 2023, Museum Sunday attracted around 750.000 visitors, a 35 percent increase on figures from the previous year. The most common group of people to take advantage of the scheme? Young people from the neighbourhood surrounding an attraction.

Book your museum visit early to avoid disappointment

While entry to 60 museums is free on Museum Sunday, guaranteeing yourself a visit to the most popular attractions will require some planning.

For locations like the Altes Museum, the Gemäldegalerie and the Pergamon Museum, visitors are required to sign up for a ticket and timeslot online. These slots become available one week in advance of the next Museum Sunday date and they go like hot cakes.

But don’t worry if you miss out, the majority of locations welcome visitors to drop by with no prior registration needed. The first Museum Sunday of 2024 takes place tomorrow! Head to the website to check out where to spend your afternoon this chilly weekend.
