New Measures Passed by German Cabinet to Support Indian Workers
On October 16, Chancellor Scholz’s Cabinet passed 30 new measures, many proposed by the Labor and Foreign Ministries, specifically designed to attract skilled workers from India. According to Deutsche Welle, one of the key initiatives is the digitalization of visas by the end of 2024. This change will simplify the migration process for Indian professionals. In the past, visa processing times for Indian workers were reduced from nine months to just two weeks. With this new measure, nearly 400,000 workers in Germany could benefit.
The Federal Labor Office has also committed to offering greater support to Indian students already in Germany, providing guidance and integration assistance. Additionally, the German government plans to offer German language classes to those interested in relocating. The language requirement has often been a barrier for foreign workers, particularly for Indians who may prefer job opportunities in English-speaking countries.
Indian Workforce in Germany Quadruples Since 2015
According to the Federal Labour Ministry, the number of skilled Indian workers in Germany has surged from 23,000 in 2015 to 137,000 by February 2024, marking a 495% increase in less than a decade. Compared to 2023, the number of Indian workers increased by 23,000. The current unemployment rate for Indians living in Germany stands at 3.7%, significantly lower than the overall rate of 7.1%.
