Italy to Reinstate Border Controls During G7 Summit in June
Key Points
1. Italy will reinstate border controls for all its borders during the upcoming G7 Summit.
2. These controls will be in place from June 5 to June 18, though the summit runs from June 13 to 15.
3. Italy also maintains land border controls with Slovenia until at least December 18, 2024.
All travelers entering Italy between June 5 and June 18 will face internal border controls due to the G7 Summit in Borgo Egnazia, Puglia. The Italian Ministry of the Interior announced this on May 31, emphasizing the temporary reintroduction of controls at national land, sea, and air borders. This decision aligns with EU Regulation 2016/399 and will help address security concerns during the summit.
Existing Temporary Border Controls
Italy currently has temporary border controls with Slovenia due to potential terrorist threats and violent activities. These controls, in place since January 19, 2024, have been extended until December 18, 2024, to address increased risks of violence and terrorist infiltration via irregular migration from the Balkan route.
Efficiency of Border Controls
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi noted that these measures prevented 2,200 irregular entries between October 2023 and March 2024, with over 1,330 rejections and 118 arrests. From January 1 to March 22, 2024, Italy recorded a 43% decrease in migrant arrivals compared to the same period in 2023.
