Poland stated that the Israeli ambassador has expressed regret for the Gaza aid convoy strike and will not face expulsion.
Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Israel's ambassador, Yacov Livne, offered apologies for the Gaza airstrike that resulted in the deaths of seven aid workers, including Polish national Damian Soból. Livne attended a meeting at the ministry after being summoned following the tragic incident.
This week, senior Polish figures, including President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk, criticized Livne for his initial response to the incident, noting his failure to apologize and his accusations of Polish politicians of antisemitism for suggesting Israel deliberately targeted the humanitarian convoy.
Ahead of his meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Szejna, there were speculations about Livne's fate, with some media outlets suggesting uncertainty regarding his diplomatic status.
Opposition leader Jarosław Kaczyński remarked that if he were in power, Livne would have faced expulsion from Poland. As Livne arrived at the foreign ministry, protesters outside called for his expulsion.
However, following the meeting, Szejna clarified that Livne would not be expelled from Poland, although a note of protest was handed to him. Szejna urged Kaczyński not to politicize the situation.
During the meeting, Livne offered apologies for the airstrike, describing it as an unprecedented event. Szejna expressed Poland's dissatisfaction with Israel's explanation of the incident, emphasizing the need for a transparent investigation in which Polish authorities would have access to all relevant information.
Szejna insisted that Polish prosecutors should be allowed to participate in Israel's investigation and any disciplinary actions against the military personnel responsible for the attack. He conveyed Poland's demand for compensation to Soból's family, and Livne requested assistance in contacting them.
In an update, Livne issued a statement confirming that he had expressed sincere apologies to Szejna.
