Portugal to Begin Issuing 10-Year Valid Passports, Government Confirms

Portugal's government has announced that the validity of their passports will be extended from five to ten years as part of the “More simplification, less bureaucracy” program aimed at making life easier for citizens.

In recent months, police and security authorities have noted increasing risks of Portuguese passports being forged, with a significant rise in the quality of counterfeit copies.

In addition to extending passport validity, the new measures will also unify identification numbers for three public services for immigrants: the Tax Identification Number (NIF), the Social Security Number (NISS), and the User Number (NNU) for access to the National Health System.

Portuguese passports, issued by the Ministry of Justice, allow holders to travel internationally. Between 2019 and 2023, four million passports were issued, according to Corriero’s report.

Since 2006, Portugal has issued electronically enhanced passports (Passaporte Eletrónico Português – PEP) with biometric information. There are currently five types of Portuguese Passports:

- Standard Portuguese electronic passport (PEP) for Portuguese citizens
- Diplomatic Passport (PD) for officials on diplomatic missions
- Passport for Foreign Citizens (PCE) for stateless persons granted residency in Portugal, valid for two years
- Special Passport (PES) for Portuguese officials in Public Administration
- Temporary Passport (PT) for emergency circumstances, valid for up to one year

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal currently specifies that Portuguese electronic passports are valid for five years.

Extension of Immigrant Documents by One Year

Previously, Portuguese authorities decided to extend the validity of immigrant documents and visas by one year, until June 30, to address immigration challenges. This decision aims to help immigrants awaiting paperwork processing by extending the validity of residence permits, work visas, and mobility visas from the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries.
