Starting March 23, 2024, Australia requires international students to meet the Genuine Student requirement.
Key Points
- Australia has enacted the Genuine Student requirement starting March 23.
- The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement has been replaced with the Genuine Student (GS) requirement.
- The objective of this new requirement is to discern students genuinely seeking quality education in Australia.
- Instead of a 300-word statement, the student visa application now features targeted questions to offer a comprehensive view of applicants to visa decision-makers.
- The Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement remains in place for applicants seeking Student Guardian visas.
Genuine Student Requirement:
As per the Migration Strategy unveiled on December 11, 2023, Australia has substituted the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement for student visas with the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. This transition took effect on March 23, 2024. Henceforth, applications submitted on or after March 23 will be evaluated based on the new Genuine Student (GS) requirement.
Implementation of the New GS Requirement:
Following discussions between the Australian Government and representatives of the education sector, the Genuine Student (GS) requirement was implemented. The objective of these changes is to accurately identify international students genuinely seeking quality education in Australia, without intentions of permanent migration.
The previous 300-word statement in the student visa application form has been replaced with targeted questions. These questions aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the applicant's background and intentions to visa decision-makers.
The targeted questions cover various aspects:
- Detailed information regarding current circumstances, encompassing family, community, employment, and financial status.
- An explanation of the chosen course and reasons for selecting Australia as a study destination.
- The perceived benefits of the chosen course.
- Details of any prior study history in Australia.
- The rationale behind applying for a Student visa for applicants holding other visas.
Student Visa Declaration:
Applicants are required to acknowledge the following:
- Understanding the purpose of studying in Australia.
- Commitment to comply with student visa conditions and promptly notifying the Department of Home Affairs of any necessary changes.
- Acknowledgment that individuals unable to legally remain in Australia after completing their studies must leave the country.
