Sweden is set to simplify the process for highly skilled foreign workers to obtain the EU Blue Card.
2. New Rules Effective January 1, 2025
The updated EU Blue Card regulations are expected to take effect on January 1, 2025.
3. Lowered Salary Requirement
A key update includes reducing the minimum salary requirement for EU Blue Card applicants in Sweden.
Sweden is expected to soon ease the path for highly qualified foreign professionals seeking the country’s EU Blue Card. On November 27, the Swedish parliament will review proposed amendments to the EU Blue Card Directive, with a vote scheduled for November 28. If approved, the new rules will take effect starting January 1, 2025.
As reported by *The Local*, these changes are designed to make the EU Blue Card more appealing for foreign talent. One significant update includes reducing the minimum salary requirement from 1.5 times the gross average salary (€5,165) to 1.25 times (€4,304). The proposed law also halves the required employment contract length from one year to six months and allows EU Blue Card holders to switch jobs without reapplying.
Additionally, the new rules enable EU Blue Card holders from other EU countries to work in Sweden for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, streamlining the process for these card holders to obtain a Swedish EU Blue Card.
Faster Processing Times for EU Blue Card Applications in Sweden
Sweden has recently announced a reduction in the processing time for EU Blue Card applications, from 90 days to just 30. This change is part of Sweden’s effort to attract and retain highly qualified professionals.
In 2023, a total of 89,037 EU Blue Cards were issued by EU countries, with India, Russia, and Turkey being the top nationalities benefiting from the program.
