The Commission has scheduled the launch of the Entry/Exit System for 12 October 2025
Commission Announces Launch of the Entry/Exit System (EES) on 12 October 2025
The European Commission has confirmed that the Entry/Exit System (EES) will officially begin operations on 12 October 2025. From this date, the system will be gradually implemented at the external borders of 29 European countries over a six-month period. This phased roll-out is designed to give border authorities, travellers, and the transport sector sufficient time to adapt to the new procedures.
The EES is a state-of-the-art IT platform that will digitally register the entry and exit of non-EU nationals travelling for short stays to the participating countries. It will collect biometric data such as fingerprints, facial images, and travel details, ensuring accurate records of cross-border movements.
The system will bring several benefits:
-
Enhanced border management through accurate data collection
-
Prevention of irregular migration and better detection of overstayers
-
Reduced identity fraud and stronger internal security
-
Smoother travel thanks to wider use of automated border checks
Importantly, the EES complies with the highest standards of data protection and privacy, guaranteeing that personal information remains secure.
From 12 October 2025, European border authorities will progressively start registering third-country nationals crossing Schengen external borders. After the six-month transition period, the EES will be fully operational at all crossing points.
Next Steps
In the coming months, the Commission and eu-LISA (the EU Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice) will work closely with Member States to ensure a seamless deployment. Ahead of the launch, travellers will also see information campaigns and awareness initiatives at airports, border checkpoints, and consulates worldwide.
